Peabody, Massachusetts has evolved into a diverse, vibrant community, a wonderful place to live and raise a family, and a tremendous economic success story. Settled as a part of Salem in 1626, the community was set off and incorporated as part of Danvers in 1752. In 1855, the community was renamed "South Danvers" and again split from its neighboring community, and finally, in 1868, the town was incorporated under its present name. The town enjoyed abundant sources of water power and supported an expansive mill economy well into the 20th century. While most of the early mills have since closed, the city has emerged in recent decades as a major residential suburb and commerce center for the region. The city's illustrious past is commemorated by a number of antique homes, historic sites and museums. The 275-acre Brooksby Farm features extensive walking trails, the historic Nathanial Felton Sr. and Nanial Felton Jr. homes, the Woodland Gardens, and abundant orchards where visitors can pick apples, strawberries, and raspberries. The George Peabody House Museum and the neighboring leather museum feature educational programs, extensive artifacts and rotating exhibits on the city's industrial history. Other popular attractions include a municipal skating rink and an 18-hole public golf course. The city is known for strong civic participation and community pride. One example is the "Pride in Peabody" program in which all segments of the community come together to enhance, restore and maintain the beauty of the city. Citizens also participate in and support the many community activities available such as the International Festival, the Brooksby Harvest Festival, the Holiday Festival and the Community Concerts series.
